SAINIK WELFARE & RESETTLEMENT
The District Sainik Welfare & Resettlement Office, Lunglei was established in May 1977 to look after the welfare of Ex-Servicemen and their families in the southern districts of Lunglei, Lawngtlai and Siaha. The office functions from the Sainik Building/Sainik Rest House located at DC Office Complex, Lunglei. The office building also houses ECHS Polyclinic, a free medical facility for Ex-Servicemen and their dependents.
The District Sainik Welfare & Resettlement Officer (DSW&RO) is the head of office and the Deputy Commissioner of Lunglei is the Chairman of the District Sainik Board.

RESPONSIBILITIES
This office has the overall responsibility for the welfare and re-settlement of Ex-Servicemen and their families. The activities of the office can be broadly classified as under :-
- Welfare
- Training
- Re-Employment
(d) Self employment
ACTIVITIES
The main activities undertaken by this office to realize these responsibilities are as given under:
- To act as a source of information regarding the Armed Forces of the country.
- To promote and maintain a feeling of goodwill between civilians, service personnel and Ex-Servicemen.
- To watch over the welfare of Ex-Servicemen and their families and to assist them in representing their cases with the local or defence authorities.
- To assist families of serving personnel and look after their welfare during the husband’s absence while on duty.
- To assist Ex-Servicemen in settlement of financial problems such as pension and other benefits due to Ex-Servicemen.
- To maintain close liaison with pension disbursing authorities like Banks and District Treasuries to ensure prompt and correct disbursement of pension and other financial benefits to Ex-Servicemen and their dependents.
- To watch closely the living conditions of each Ex-Servicemen and his family and, if needed, make suitable recommendations for relief from various military and civil charitable funds.
- To maintain liaison with other welfare organizations with a view to enlarge the field of additional source of welfare and concessions for Ex-Servicemen and their families/dependents.
- To maintain close liaison for purpose of re-settlement/re-employment with industrial organization, Employment Exchange, various PSUs and revenue authority.
- To maintain the details of and provide assistance to War widows, dependents and those disabled in action.
- To provide financial assistance to non pensioner, World War-II Veterans and their families.
- To provide medical assistance in co-operation with ECHS Polyclinic.
- To provide assistance for settlement of land and other disputes.
- To maintain welfare measures and other institutions like Sainik Rest House, Jai Jawan Stall, War Memorial and other vocational training facilities.
- To organize Armed Forces Flag Day, Rallies and Re-Union.
- To assist the three services (i.e.: Army, Navy & Air Forces) whenever called for.
- To assist suitable candidates for enlistment in the Armed Forces.
