Report on Media in Lunglei District:

The media scenario in Lunglei District, both print and electronic media is unsurprisingly dynamic and vibrant, given the entrepreneurship attitude of the people, coupled with demands from the public and on-going Government efforts to promote the industry. The print media has situated itself to remain the major mass media within the District. The District has 12 Daily Newspapers and 3 Weekly Papers, with distribution spread across the length and breadth of the District. It is worthwhile to note that these papers are usually run as a one man show, with the editor/ owner looking after every aspect of his production right from news gathering and reporting to offset printing and distribution of papers. Electronic media, a comparatively late entrant to Lunglei has also progressed significantly along with the economic growth and development of the District. At present, there are two main Cable Network operators in Lunglei town – JB Cable Networks and LDF Cable Networks which serve thousands of households within the town and nearby villages.

Mizoram Journalist Association, Lunglei District was founded in the year 1972 as the Lunglei Journalist Association (LJA). The name change occurred in 2006 when it joined the Mizoram Journalist Association, the apex body for Mizoram journalist. The MJA Lunglei District has at present 23 members. The Lunglei District MJA has the distinction of being the only District MJA with a Sub-Divisional MJA under it, namely the Hnahthial Sub Division MJA.

The I&PR Department, Lunglei District and MJA have a close working relationship, and have jointly fostered close ties with the District administration, Government Departments and NGO’s within the District. Joint inspections of major Government projects and developmental initiatives are conducted on a periodic basis with the concerned Government Departments. Observations and learnings from these inspections are then disseminated to the public through mass media.  Exposure tours within and outside the State are also conducted for members of the MJA.
