CENTRALLY SPONSORED SCHEMES TAKEN UP BY DRDA, LUNGLEI

Swarynjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana : The major objective of SGSY is to bring the assisted rural poor families above the poverty line by providing them income generating assets through a mix of bank credit and government subsidy. The scheme involves organization of the poor into Self Help Groups (SHGs) and building capacities through social mobilization, training and skill development, selection of key activities, planning of activity clusters, creation of infrastructure, technological and marketing support etc.

Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY) : IAY aims at providing financial assistance to the rural poor living below poverty line for construction of pucca house. The ceiling on construction assistance under IAY is Rs.35,000 per unit in plain areas and Rs. 38,500 in hilly/difficult areas. For upgradation of a kutcha house, the financial assistance is Rs. 15,000 per unit. The dwelling units should invariably be allotted in the name of a female member of the beneficiary household. Alternatively, it can be allotted in the name of both husband and wife.


National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) : The objective of the Act is to enhance livelihood security in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.

Unique features of the Act include, time bound employment guarantee and wage payment within 15 days. 90 percent of the cost for employment provided is borne by the Central Government and 10 percent by the State Government. The Act also mandates 33 percent participation for women. The Act prohibits the use of contractors and machineries in the execution of works.

Integrated Watershed Development Programme (IWDP): The main objective of the Waterhsed Development Programme is harvesting every drop of rainwater for the purposes of irrigation, plantations including horticulture and floriculture, pasture development, fisheries etc. to create sustainable sources of income for the village community as well as for drinking water supplies. Besides, employment generation, poverty alleviation, community empowerment and development of human and other economic resources of the rural areas and restoring ecological balance by harnessing, conserving and developing natural resources are and important objective of the Programme.
